Finance and Accounting Recruiter in Madison

There is an empty chair in your finance department, and everyone else is quietly absorbing the work it used to do. Month-end takes longer. The reporting your leadership team asks for shows up late or half-finished. Meanwhile the resumes a contingency agency sends over do not match the role, and screening them is one more thing on your plate.

I take that off your plate. Finance and accounting placement at small and mid-size Madison-area employers is the only work I do, and I have done it for 15 years. I am Marc McRoberts, and I run MDM Recruiting. Call me about a controller role in Middleton or a finance-manager search in Fitchburg and you deal with one person who already knows the south-central Wisconsin talent pool and hands you a short, vetted list instead of a pile to sort through.

The roles I fill

My work covers the full finance and accounting stack, from the person who signs off on the statements to the one who builds them:

Maybe you need a CFO who can hold their own with your board and your lenders, or a staff accountant who can own the close without someone checking every entry. Either way, I have placed that exact role before at an organization built like yours.

Built for the Madison economy

Madison is not a factory town, and its finance hiring reflects that. The economy here leans on state government, the university, and the employers that have grown up around them — a large healthcare presence through UW Health and the software and services orbiting Epic out in Verona, a deep insurance sector anchored by names like American Family, and a steady stream of biotech and technology firms spun out of UW research. There is manufacturing in the ring around the city too, but the center of gravity is white-collar, stable, and knowledge-driven.

That shapes the finance talent I keep close. An insurer or healthcare organization that needs a controller comfortable with reserves, grant funding, or third-party reimbursement. A software or biotech company that needs an FP&A analyst who can model recurring revenue and a real burn rate, not just last year plus five percent. A manufacturer in Sun Prairie that still needs someone who understands standard costing and inventory. Most of my searches sit in the 50-to-200-employee range, where one finance hire changes how the whole department runs.

Why a specialist beats a generalist here

I do not fill a finance opening one week and a marketing role the next. Finance and accounting is the entire practice, and 15 years of it has left me with a working network of controllers, analysts, and finance leaders specific to south-central Wisconsin. A generalist recruiter has to go learn your role from scratch; I usually already know the handful of people in this market who can genuinely do it.

It also means I can read past the resume. I know which questions separate an accountant who interviews well from one who will actually hold up under your close, your systems, and your leadership team’s expectations. Fifteen years of those conversations is the judgment you are paying for.

What working with me is actually like

There is no hand-off. The intake call, the sourcing, the screening, and the reference checks are all me, start to finish, so nothing lands with a junior recruiter who has never filled a finance seat. By the time a candidate reaches your calendar, we have already talked through your organization, your systems, and the real reason the role is open, and they want it.

My bias is toward fit over volume. Three people who genuinely match the role are worth more of your time than thirty who padded the pipeline, and building that short list is the part that actually saves you weeks.

Why the right finance hire matters

Few hires carry the downside a finance hire does. A controller who cannot close cleanly, a CFO who cannot forecast, an analyst you cannot trust with the numbers — those misses surface in your reporting, your board conversations, and the hours you end up covering yourself. Twenty minutes with someone who fills these roles for a living is cheap insurance against that.
